GET is a state 529 plan, so the after-tax money you put in will grow tax-free. When a student is ready for college, the money withdrawn remains tax-free when used for qualified higher education expenses like tuition, room and board, books, computers, and supplies.
Parent-owned 529 plans get favorable financial aid treatment
Withdrawals from a 529 plan owned by a dependent student or their parent are not counted as income on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have a minimal effect on financial aid eligibility. The value of reducing student debt with a 529 account far outweighs the minimal impact on financial aid.

The highly anticipated “Free College” sounds fantastic. The reality is, it will only cover some, not all, college expenses, and it certainly won’t cover all paths to a student’s dreams.
