Recap of Today’s COVID-19 News and Updates

Numbers: As of 11:59 p.m. on April 17, there are 11,802 cases of COVID-19 in Washington state. Visit the Department of Health's website for cases by county, demographics, and more.

Potential protests on the Capitol Campus: We are seeing on social media that possible unpermitted activity on the Capitol Campus is planned on Sunday. We are in the midst of a pandemic and these are unprecedented times. The Department of Health urges people to NOT take actions such as gathering that can threaten everyone’s health and safety, including our most vulnerable people who are higher risk of death from the virus. Large gatherings will quickly undo all of the benefits we have gained over the past month through physical distancing. We encourage people to follow Governor Inslee's proclamation to stay home and stay healthy.

Listen to previous COVID-19 Update Telebriefings: Recordings of past Joint Information Center (JIC) telebriefings are now available.

  • Kathy Lofy, MD & Cathy Wasserman, PhD, MPH provide an overview on COVID-19 data posted on the Departmen of Health website. DOH has been continually adding new data to its online dashboard which now includes hospitalization rates, negative test rates and demographic information regarding race/ethnicity.

  • Assistant Secretary Bill Moss and Candace Goehring from DSHS and Dr. Charissa Fotinos with HCA discuss the state of long term care facilities in the state.

State funds community-based program to ensure COVID-19 information gets to hard-to-reach communities: In an effort to make sure all Washingtonians have the information they need to stay healthy, the state is funding a $500,000 community-based outreach campaign. Community-rooted organizations will provide emergency language and outreach services to groups disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic but less likely to be receiving timely information through government agencies and traditional news media.
