A New Look for Commerce

Dec. 19, 2019

Did you know Commerce is home to nearly 100 programs with exceptionally diverse responsibilities that have expanded and contracted over the years? In fact, the Department of Commerce has had a half dozen different names as an agency since its founding in 1957.

The binding element across Commerce -- our mission -- is to strengthen communities. We have partners across the state that help us do that by providing guidance on clean energy, infrastructure financing, affordable housing or business development.

We developed our previous logo 10 years ago when the legislature changed our agency name from the Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development (CTED) to the Department of Commerce. To help us move into a new decade, we wanted to design a new logo that more closely represents our diversity while conveying collaboration, innovation and cohesion.

This week we are launching our new logo, which appears above in this message. We believe this logo represents our unique approach to strengthening communities through optimism, diversity, creative problem solving, collaboration and cohesion. It blends both contemporary and traditional looks by using different fonts while adding a human feel through the fresh use of color. The aspirational star in the middle represents our goals of continuous improvement and innovation.

You will begin seeing the new logo on external communication pieces, our website, social media channels, and other informational materials.

While our current logo has served us well, we believe the bright new look reflects our collective aspiration to serve even more people across the state.

As we begin a new decade, we look forward to working with all of you to serve the people of Washington.
